The original BBC recording is much better than this. Five star has gone down to three only. Why? Because those who know about these things have decided to gild the lilly. They added background muzak to an already perfect recording and so spoiled it. It really does not need music; the spoken words by Burton are sufficiently wonderful without the distraction of of the awful 'muzak'. The town is supposed to be quiet, dead quiet, when sleeping. Instead we have noise. Muzak noise. Buy the BBC original, its MUCH better.

Just a stunning performance. Corin Redgrave vulnerable, old and mad and at times tender - always utterly convincing. Kika Markham genuinely scary as Regan and Geraldine James almost her equal. All actors always wonderfully clear and sound effects and music only add - never intrusive. Overall a stunning performance.

Jules Verne wrote some incredible stories in his day many of which have been made into successful movies. It only seems right that the Colonial Radio should present one of his little known Civil War short stories to the listening public. while it may not be one of his most fanciful tales, it is packed with action and suspence, and remains quite true to its time.

I think you will find this program to be an enjoyable hour spent, and then you will begin to wonder about what else Jules wrote that needs to be performed by these guys.

The magical and romantic legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table Is one of the great stories of the world. Like most of his generation, Mark Twain, the great 19th century comic American writer, knew and loved the book. He wrote mainly about his own time - and his greatest successes such as Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer drew on the Mississippi countryside where he grew up. But he also had a wicked sense of humour, and he wanted to show that Malory's picture of brave knights and rescued damsels was not as shiny or honourable we may like to think.

From the moment the idea came to him, to whisk a modern man (modern=1880s for Twain) back in time to the heyday of Camelot, he couldn't resist elaborating on the realities of life In Arthurian times. His Connecticut hero. Hank Morgan, found not a land of grace and ideals but one which was smelly, dangerous, uncomfortable and backward.

Hank finds that life is regarded as cheap, that torture and execution are commonplace, that superstition is everywhere and even Merlin is a con-man. Few wash, the music is terrible, living in armour is horrendous and deception is everywhere.

So Hank decides that he will make the best of his situation and introduce 6th century England to some of the improvements of his contemporary (19th century) existence - advertising, soap, newspapers, stocks and shares, and the railroad. And, with his superior knowledge, he will become The Boss.

How do the people of an older time take to it? In much the same way Twain suggests, as we would if someone from the distant future came down and tried to make us live their way: The older people generally do not like giving up their traditional ways, even though there were very clear advantages and only the youth can adapt.

Yet despite this, Hank cannot but admire some qualities of those knights and their damsels - not least the ability to stand up and fight in steel armour that would crush the contemporary man.

The novel began mainly as a delightful fantasy, but as Twain wrote, the darker side of his own character and view of the human race emerged. He believed in science, economics and practicalities; and government based on the equalities of opportunity that characterised America of Twain's day He couldn't accept a people who would choose monarchy. A Connecticut Yankee shows what can happen when these two very different societies come together.

The radio play of The Chronology Protection Case was adapted by Mark Shanahan with Paul Levinson, based on the novelette by Paul Levinson which first appeared in the pages of Analog Magazine in September, 1995. The script of the radio adaptation was nominated for a prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award as "Best Play of 2003" by the Mystery Writers of America.

The radio play was initially performed live before a studio audience at the Museum of TV & Radio in September of 2002. It was subsequently recorded at CDM Studios in New York City in 2003, featuring a cast of nine actors, with an original sound design and score. The CDM recording was produced by Charles de Montebello and Mark Shanahan.

The Chronology Protection Case radio play, a science fiction murder mystery, features Shanahan in the role of Dr. Phil D'Amato, the forensic detective who appears in Levinson's acclaimed novels, "The Silk Code," "The Consciousness Plague" and "The Pixel Eye." I give this one two stars mostly for effort. Since I am a stickler for historical correctness, I have difficulty with an entertainment program that strays too far from the facts of subject. I do give them kudas for making an interesting drama, but if you like your history mixed with facts, try the many history programs available from the Colonial Radio Theatre. They have figured out how to do this really well.

This program is the ultimate in Christmas oriented audio theater. The music score is awesome, the acting and sound effects superb. The Colonial Radio Theatre folks were very true to the book, and have included sections that are almost universally edited out. This does not hurt the flow of the story at all. Dickens was a master, and this his masterpiece. Download this one and you will be very very impressed... Merry Christmas everyone!

Eight leading British actors bring the medieval world into the 21st century, and at least in terms of character, not much seems to have changed!

The Canterbury Tales, written near the end of Chaucer's life and hence towards the close of the fourteenth century, Is perhaps the greatest English literary work of the Middle Ages: yet it speaks to us today with almost undimmed clarity and relevance.

Chaucer imagines a group of twenty-nine pilgrims who meet in the Tabard Inn in Southwark, intent on making the traditional journey to the martyr's shrine of St Thomas a Becket in Canterbury. Harry Bailly landlord of the Tabard, proposes that the company should entertain themselves on the road with a storytelling competition. The teller of the best tale will be rewarded with a supper at the others' expense when the travellers return to London. Chaucer never completed this elaborate scheme - each pilgrim was supposed to tell four tales, but in fact we only have twenty-four altogether - yet, with the pieces of linking narrative and the prologues to each tale, the work as a whole constitutes a marvellously varied evocation of the medieval world which also goes beyond its period to penetrate (humorously, gravely tolerantly) human nature itself.

Chaucer, as a member of this company of pilgrims, presents himself with mock innocence as the admiring observer of his fellows, depicted in the General Prologue. Many of these are clearly rogues - the coarse, cheating Miller, the repulsive yet compelling Pardoner - yet in each of them Chaucer finds something human, often a sheer vitality or love of life which is irresistible: the Monk may prefer hunting to prayer, but he is after all a manly man, to be an abbot able. Perhaps only the unassuming, devoted Parson and his humbly labouring brother the Ploughman rise entirely above Chaucer's teasing irony; certainly the Parson's fellow clergy and religious officers belong to a Church riddled with gross corruption. Everyone, it seems, is on the make, in a world still recovering from the ravages of the Black Death.

Fire Springs

Anthony Nanson founded Bath Storytelling Circle in 1999. He has told stories and run workshops in venues around the country and teaches a popular course in storytelling and mythology at the University of Bath. His stories and critical writing have been published in several magazines and books.

Kirsty Hartsiotis is a former member of the theatre group The Lords of Misrule, which specialises in medieval drama. She has performed in and produced numerous plays, including the Arthurian romance Sir Launfal. She has a special interest in storytelling for heritage venues.

David Metcalfe is a folk musician and storyteller with a particular interest in the indigenous British tradition. He is a singer, guitarist, and bodhran player. A former field archaeologist, he maintains an active interest in the early medieval period.

Kevan Manwaring was drawn to Bath by the legend-filled landscape of the West Country. His epic poem Spring Fall won him the Bardic Chair of Caer Badon in 1998. He has performed and run workshops in venues around the Southwest and has produced seven collections of poetry, including one on CD.
