"A masterwork of irony that contains both a dark and bitter meaning and

a joyous, extraordinary creativity of imagination. That's why it has lived for so long."

Malcom Bradbury

Gulliver's Travels tells of the fantastic voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, an Englishman

and ship's surgeon, who travels to the "several remote nations of the world." In the beginning,

he becomes shipwrecked in the land of Lilliput, where the distressed inhabitants are only six

inches tall. His second voyage takes him to Brobdingnag, where lives a race of giants. At

Glubdubdrib, the Island of Sorcerers, he speaks with great men of the past and learns from

them the lies of history. Further adventures find Gulliver in a land ruled by intelligent horses.

For children, it is an enchanting fantasy; for adults, it is a satirical masterpiece, a parody of

political life in Swift's time, and a scathing send-up of manners and morals in

eighteenth-century England.

Alexander's Bridge

Author : Willa Cather

Performed By : Marguerite Gavin

Publisher : Blackstone Audio Inc

Runtime : 2 hours 30 minutes

Categories : Classic Literature

There is a pleasure in listening to the imagery of Alexander's Bridge that is similar to

viewing a beautiful watercolor, as in the following description of a Boston street in late afternoon: "The sun

sank rapidly; the silvery light had faded from the bare boughs and the watery twilight was setting in when

Wilson at last walked down the hill, descending into cooler and cooler depths of grayish shadow."

Against this delicate imagery, Willa Cather renders the tough inner terrain of a man in mid-life crisis. Bartley

Alexander is a master bridge engineer. At forty-three he is at the height of his power, comfortable with success

and all it brings. Yet he yearns for the lost vibrancy of his youth. He leads a double life, veering between his

beautiful, accomplished wife and his mistress, an actress he knew as a student in Paris. This conflict creates

a crack in the structure of his life which ultimately undermines him.

'Here, at the age of thirty nine, I began to be old. '

In 1944 Captain Charles Ryder travels with a company of soldiers to Brideshead. It's a place he's been to before, and one which serves as a potent reminder of the decadent and stylish lifestyle now destroyed by the austerity of the Second World War.

Evelyn Waugh's moving and nostalgic novel revisits a golden age, when Ryder was a student at Oxford in the 1920s and in thrall to the captivating but tragic Sebastian Flyte. As the story unfolds over the next two decades, Ryder traces his friendship with Sebastian and his involvement with the young man's aristocratic Catholic family - in particular Julia, the eldest Flyte daughter.

Ben Miles stars as Charles Ryder with Jamie Bamber as Sebastian in this full-cast dramatisation, which also features Eleanor Bron and Edward Petherbridge.

After their return from Planet X, Brad and Alex have a tough time trying to get their ship to pass its maintenance review. The alien’s viral onslaughts have left the Full Advantage riddled with software mutations and there are suspicions of even more invasive alterations. Dieter, whom they’d rescued from the moon-swamp at Planet X, is alive but struggling to shake off his infection.

Even though their mission had been highly successful by many standards, no sentient press agents on Earth have shown the slightest interest at their return. Surely their findings were newsworthy?!

Things take a turn for the worse when Dieter’s condition deteriorates. Just then one of the most powerful A.I.’s in the world requests their immediate presence and offers compelling arguments for a risky mission to an unchartered system twenty thousand light years away. Could this A.I.’s theory about the origin of the alien they found at Planet X be right? If so, can they trust a fragment of this A.I. aboard the Full Advantage to have their well-being at heart, and for that matter, can they still rely on their own ship to bring them back safely?

And as if this mission didn’t have enough unknowns, Brad couldn’t deny the wishes of a dying man and has allowed Dieter to come along!

"The great virtue of All Shook Up is its unfashionable insistence that music be taken seriously...

"Wall Street Journal

"Refreshing...may well appeal to both critics and defenders of pop music."

Publishers Weekly

The national debate over popular music's effect on character is both furious and confused. Conservatives complain primarily about lyrics, appealing to public decency and safety. Liberals, swift to the defense of any self-expression, simultaneously celebrate rock's liberating ethos and deny its cultural influence. Carson Holloway is out to shatter the assumptions of pop's critics and defenders alike, showing that

music is more beneficial than we think.

Plato and Aristotle, Holloway finds, were aware that music can either inflame the soul with passion or can awaken it to reason and help to cultivate temperance. What Holloway proposesa rediscovery of the musical wisdom of Plato and Aristotlewill completely change the way we think about music.

Carson Holloway is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the 2005-06 William E. Simon Fellow in the James Madison Program at Princeton University. His articles have appeared in the Review of Politics and Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy.

Nadia May has been nominated as an AudioFile Golden Voice five years running and is a winner of fourteen AudioFile Earphones Awards. She is the co-founder of TheatreFirst, a theater company in the San Francisco Bay Area where she currently lives.

From Jules Verne comes this radio production about an English Blockade Runner in the American Civil War, and its attempt to free a prisoner held by the Confederates.
A sea story by a great author comes to life
4
Bob from Colorado - 19 Jun 2004
Jules Verne wrote some incredible stories in his day many of which have been made into successful movies. It only seems right that the Colonial Radio should present one of his little known Civil War short stories to the listening public. while it may not be one of his most fanciful tales, it is packed with action and suspence, and remains quite true to its time.
I think you will find this program to be an enjoyable hour spent, and then you will begin to wonder about what else Jules wrote that needs to be performed by these guys.

Alan Bennett's three classic BBC Radio full-cast dramas; Kafka's Dick, Forty Years On and An Englishman Abroad

Kafka's Dick - Alison Steadman, Richard Griffiths and Nigel Anthony star in this BBC Radio 4 version of Alan Bennett's acclaimed comedy drama, described by the Daily Telegraph's Gillian Reynolds as ' Pure joy '. Bennett's brilliantly clever comedy not only examines the relationship between life and art, but also asks what was Kafka's embarrassing little problem?

Forty Years On - Alan Bennett stars in the production of his own acclaimed satirical comedy about a headmaster of Albion House who is retiring and takes part in the end-of-year entertainment for the last time. It also stars Robert Bathurst and Eleanor Bron .

An Englishman Abroad - Michael Gambon and Penelope Wilton star as Guy Burgess and Coral Browne in this BBC Radio full-cast drama based on a real-life chance encounter in 1958 between the world famous spy and a Shakespearean actress.

Clever, funny and poignant, Alan Bennett's masterful plays are rightly regarded as modern classics.

It's not often that an acclaimed historian is revealed to be the author of light
verse, but John R. Alden here presents us with 1,707 couplets, quatrains, and other terse
verse in the tradition of Ogden Nash. His subject matter ranges from dinosaurs to computers,
from Confucius to Darwin, from Jonah to George Bush. His wit, wisdom, and powers of
observation are sure to amuse and delight. A sample: "How did Arkman Noah/Provide for

John R. Alden died in 1991. Blackstone Audiobooks has also recorded his George Washington: A Biography and Rise of the American Republic.
